the base of our products. One example is the so-called D-Sack, a packaging that quite literally disappears, or dissolves, upon use. You just throw the sack directly into the concrete or mortar mixer without opening it. This makes life much easier for the user and provides a cleaner, healthier and safer worksite. No dust, no mess, no spills and no empty sacks.Other innovations include FibreForm, a paper that can be pressed in a cold state into forms previously achieved with plastics, and a unique dust-free stand-up paper pouch for dry goods such as sugar, flour and pasta. At BillerudKorsnäs, we believe it is important to be responsible throughout the value chain, from extraction of raw material to recycling of products. We work closely together with business partners, NGOs and public institutions to generate new solutions. We also try hard to reduce our own emissions of greenhouse gases by investing in new energy-efficient technology, developing our work methods, switching to renewable energy, and optimizing our transport assignments. Today we use more than 97 per cent biofuels. Our goal is to completely phase out fossil fuels from production and we are now battling with the last few percentage points. I am very proud of the fact that our efforts were recently recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, and we were named Sustainability Leader in the Containers & Packaging category. As the only international forestry industry company we have also been rewarded with a place on CDP’s prestigious Climate A-list for showing global leadership through our climate improvement initiatives. It is an acknowledgement of our efforts, and that we actually walk the talk.To make sure that our greenhouse gas emissions targets are in line with what is required by researchers to halt the global temperature rise, we have signed up to the Science Based Targets initiative. Furthermore, we have identified the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal number 13 – climate change – as crucial to our business, and we now assess how this goal can be implemented and followed up in our operations. I look forward to the COP22 meeting in Marrakech and to the full implementation of the Paris Agreement. With the new climate agreement in place, the transition towards a sustainable and bio-based economy will surely accelerate. Together with like-minded companies around the world we want to take the lead. ■ABOUT THE AUTHORHenrik Essén is SVP Communication and Sustainability aPictured: Henrik Essént BillerudKorsnäs.UNBEATABLE RESULTS FOR PAPER BAGSComparison of Global Warming Potential (GWP)* between a paper carrier bag from BillerudKorsnäs and a comparable bag made of plastic (HDPE).*GWP is a factor that refers to how much a given emission of a greenhouse gas contributes to global warming compared to the same emission of carbon dioxide.SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING 063
