It promises to be the best yet, running a very broad arts spectrum from cannibals in art and legend to street art, the secrets of Tudor royalty, Rick Mather’s millennial museums and glamorous courtesans.The special programme of lectures is specially designed to appeal to younger generations – it is the perfect way to introduce NADFAS to friends or relatives. Each lecture starts at 7.30pm (doors open at 6.30pm), perfect for people coming straight from work. Light and space were introduced into the museum experience and circulation improved the visitor’s experience.This lecture looks at the architectural strategies and principals used by Mather to transform them into modern masterpieces, while preserving the historical buildings. Andrew Hopkins has been Associate Professor at the University of L’Aquila since 2004. FRIDAY NOVEMBER 25The Creative Courtesan: the art of high Class prostitution in Renaissance Italy Sarah Dunant Titian’s Venus of Urbino is just one of a number of Renaissance masterpieces that celebrate the beauty of the female form. But who were the women who modelled for such paintings? Rich high class men married late to virginal women they were not expected to be faithful to, so where did all that male desire go? The answer was the birth of courtesan culture: women as cultured, clever and fashionable as they were lovely. In exploring the private lives of the Tudors, Tracy Borman will interweave familiar tales with lesser-known episodes such as Henry VII’s courtship of his own daughter-in-law, and the lingering, excruciating death of his grandson, Edward VI. Tracy Borman is joint Chief Curator of Historic Royal Palaces. See page 46 for details of her new book.WEDNESDAY SEPT 14Cannibals in Art, Myth and RealityLouise Schofi eld In this light-hearted look at the rituals, myths and truths of cannibalism, Louise Schofi eld will show how they have inspired some extraordinary works of art – from great paintings to the cannibal cartoons of the Victorian era.
