Societies NewsUpdates from Societies across the country and beyondMore space for stories as NADFAS boosts social mediaWe are always keen to share stories about Societies’ volunteering work and activities, so we are pleased to give details about the many different ways this is now possible. As well as NADFAS Review, we are using as many of them as possible on social media sites like Facebook or Twitter (we are of course mindful when dealing with Young Arts stories not to identify children). NADFAS now has a LinkedIn Company page and LinkedIn Groups for Society members and committees to join. An Instagram feed is the latest addition, just search for ‘nadfas_house’. Please continue to send us your news and pictures so we can share them across these platforms – the addresses can be found at the top of page 3.Regent’s Park DFAS does not have a waiting list and would welcome new members. If anyone in the central and north London areas is interested in either attending a lecture or joining the Society, please go to the Society’s website regentsparkdfas.org.uk and use the ‘Contact us’ link on the ‘About us’ page to request further information.Among the upcoming lectures is ‘Designing historical costumes for fi lm and television: it will never show!’ with Anna Buruma on July 5 and ‘Mars and the muses: the renaissance of armour’ with Dr Tobias Capwell on October 4.Regent’s Park DFAS seeks members Uckfi eld & Lewes DFAS has supported a project for pupils from the Year 13 Art and Graphics classes to create an sculpture leafl et and trail for Farley Farm House, in Chiddingly, East Sussex. This was home to surrealist artists Roland Penrose and Lee Miller, and a holiday home for Picasso. The pupils found it a new and different experience – they remarked that it taught them a lot about work as a team and working to an industry brief. Although there were agreements and disagreements, they felt that the leafl ets turned out really well. Three pupils were chosen to present their work to the Society. One commented: “When we arrived, we were treated to lunch and drinks. We discussed with them how we came up with the idea of a ‘zine’ style theme. The presentation went well despite pauses and stutters but we felt we represented the school well.” Left: At Farley Farm HouseUckfi eld & Lewes sets a Farley Farm House TrailA new cover star thanks to Benahavis brochure ideaIn February, Benahavis DFAS launched its second Children’s Painting Competition – part of the Society’s annual art exhibition. The pupils, aged 11 to 14, were asked to create an image based on next season’s lecture programme that could be printed on the programme brochure. The fi rst three winners also won cash prizes of €300, donated by a local company. NADFAS Trustee Billy Dawson was among the three judges. The outright winner was Ines Illis Mejias with her outstanding Head of Salvador Dali. The competition was one of the highlights of the exhibition, attracting many comments. In addition, the teachers were highly enthusiastic about the theme which inspired their students to research topics from ‘Food as Art’ to ‘Vivaldi in Venice’.
