HUBERT ROBERTKnown fondly as ÔRobert des ruinesÕ because of his penchant for painting ancient ruins in idealised landscapes, Hubert Robert (1733Ð1808) was one of FranceÕs most successful artists during his lifetime. Hubert Robert, edited by Margaret Morgan Grasselli, Curator and Head of the Department of Old Master Drawings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, outlines his lasting contributions to French visual culture. Robert’s skills were manifold, working under the patronage of wealthy French supporters. However, in many ways the most fascinating aspect of his work is the way in which it chronicled the demise of this glittering society after the Revolution. ¥ Hubert Robert edited by Margaret Morgan Grasselli, £42 (RRP £45)2. WINIFRED KNIGHTS (1899Ð1947)Winifred Knights was one of the most original women artists of the early 20th century and this summer she will be celebrated in a new book to go alongside an exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Winifred Knights: 1899–1847 by Sacha Llewellyn provides the fi rst full account of Knights’ life and deeply autobiographical work, drawing on previously unpublished material, including letters and diaries, sketchbooks and photographs. In 1920, Knights became the fi rst British woman to win the Rome Scholarship in Decorative Painting, considered at the time to be ‘the highest distinction of its kind in the Empire’. ¥ Winifred Knights: 1899Ð1847 by Sacha Llewellyn, £38 (RRP £40)1. 3. 2. 46 NADFAS REVIEW / SUMMER 2016 www.nadfas.org.ukNADFAS BOOK CLUB
