An interesting subject or new angle not only puts a fl edgling Society on a good footing, but also sets the agenda. A calendar of events and seminars helps to maintain interest and enthusiasm. An example is Javea, a coastal town in the province of Alicante, Spain. Javea is very popular seaside resort and market town, with a high percentage of UK expatriates attracted to its gothic architecture, winding streets and rich heritage. This made it a potential location for a new Society, building on the success of other Societies in Spain. NADFAS had received suggestions from a few people that Javea would be a good place for a NADFAS Society, but in order to start the process it was important to fi nd people willing to become committee members. Blevins Franks Financial Management Limited, which has donated funds towards the activities of a number of Societies across Europe, was keen to be involved by helping towards the cost of the event. Blevins Franks has been providing specialist, professional tax and fi nancial planning advice to UK expatriates across Europe for decades. On its advice, the taster event for Javea DFAS was held in mid-April at the Denia Marriott La Sella Golf Resort & Spa, where popular NADFAS-accredited Lecturer Leslie Primo offered his angle on ‘Masters of the Renaissance: Leonardo and Michelangelo’. After the lecture, drinks and tapas were served, while guests had a further opportunity to learn more about NADFAS. It was very well received, with lots of enthusiasm and as a result a number of people have come forward to help.Funding a new Society can be a problem, but working with a company that is willing to provide assistance can be one neat solution. A fuller calendar and more high-profi le Lecturers can help drive membership.¥ Anyone interested in joining the Society in Javea should contact membership@nadfas.org.uk ■A taste of things to comeA perfectly-chosen taster lecture can really help to encourage membership when starting a new Society – and this is especially true abroadwww.nadfas.org.uk NADFAS REVIEW / SUMMER 2016 41
