018 INDUSTRY INTRODUCTIONIndeed, as a value proposition, LED offers huge savings. In 2006 – the last year the lighting market was changing at an evolutionary pace – lighting accounted for 19 per cent of the global electricity consumption. A universal switch to LED lighting would reduce this proportion to around 8 per cent, curbing global CO2 emissions by about 1,400 megatons by 2030 while delivering €272 billion in energy savings and the saving of 1,250 power plants compared to ‘‘business as usual’’ (see Table 1). With LED lighting consuming at least 40 per cent less energy than conventional lighting, the potential savings from connected LED lighting with controls can reach 80 per cent.Beyond energy efficiency, the following examples give an exciting glimpse of things to come.■ Connected street lights are transforming cityscapes. Los Angeles, an early adopter of LED technology, now enjoys the largest deployment of connected LED-based municipal street lighting in the world. Beyond allowing officials to provide more reliable, better light for the safety and wellbeing of citizens, LED is delivering an energy saving of 63 per cent and a cost reduction of almost US$9 million per year. ■ Connected lighting is forming the backbone of the smart building of the future. At Amsterdam’s innovative Edge office building, 6,500 connected LED luminaires distributed throughout the building’s 15 stories form a “digital ceiling” that allows employees to create a more personal, better lit working space, while allowing building managers track energy consumption and streamline maintenance operations. This reduces the building’s carbon footprint, while realizing projected savings of €100,000 in energy costs and €1.5 million in space utilization costs per year. ■ In the shopping space, connected LED lighting integrated with indoor positioning technology is allowing Carrefour, France’s largest grocery chain, to use visible light communications from overhead lighting to send a unique code that communicates with a shopper’s smartphone. The smartphone app then pinpoints the user’s exact location in the store and directs him or her to nearby deals and items on the grocery list. “ AS A VALUE PROPOSITION, LED OFFERS HUGE SAVINGS ” Region€ bnCarbon mt# Power PlantGlobal27214001250EU (incl.
